New Website for GNOME Do

GNOME Do has had a pretty lackluster homepage for a couple of months. A few people have expressed interest in working on art or a website for Do, but nobody has really stepped up to the plate yet. In the meantime, I found a moderately pleasant, standards-compliant, free template. I tweaked it slightly, added a dash of Tango, and voila! I loathe “Web 2.0 style,” so I removed some gloss and other plastic nastiness and I think it will do for the time being; however, if you have an eye for design and want to contribute to the project, send me a link to some of your work and you could find yourself in charge of design for GNOME Do. I’ve also checked all of the site’s files into Bazaar on Launchpad, so if you’d like to make changes to the site, send me your patches!

  • Hey Dave,
Quick question: Why did you choose Tango. I was going through it’s website and I don’t see anything that would make me choose that over Joomla which has been around for quite a while, and has a very rich portfolio of plugins/addons available. Is there something I’m missing?

    Thanks

  • Very nice!

  • Danish, the something that you’re missing is that “Tango” is simply the style of icons used. Joomla is a big, highly complicated content engine that would be overkill for this task.

  • Awesome, nice design.

  • Looks nice! The one concern I’d have is that calling it a “remote control for your GNOME Desktop” is a bit confusing. In what way is it remote? I would assume it was some kind of remote desktop app.

  • Alex, I completely agree and I was thinking about changing that for exactly that reason. However, I feel that most people would understand “remote control” just to mean a way of controlling something.
