I know this is old but I want to comment about the bug that Peng mentioned.

Basically I usually download cover art when I buy the album and rip it onto my hard drive. Therefore, in each of my artist/album folders I have a file called cover.jpg which has the cover. Rhythmbox (while playing the song) searches in the directory and displays it.

What your plugin is doing is displaying ONLY the covers that Rhythmbox has downloaded from the internet and stored in "/.gnome2/rhythmbox"

Since none of my covers were downloaded, I essentially have no cover art in gnome-do. Any thoughts on this?

Thanks for the plugin!

I agree your Haskell code (and Python snippet) is the epitome of pithiness!

Nevertheless, I came up with a solution that I feel is a bit more "self-documenting" in the spirit of the original challenge -- e.g.: that a lay person could read the code and understand what's going on.

I've posted it at:

Very true. Will you be voting for a 3rd-party?

It's a shame that Ron Paul is not in the run for president, anymore. The media never paid much attention to him while he was running (Bill Maher did), but now that he's not running for president, he's on the news all the time.

Thanks for the explanation. I've been hit with this bug, but its been more of an annoyance than anything else. I'll take your advice and downgrade till this has been resolved.

Thanks for such a great tool for Linux, Gnome-Do was one of the reasons I switched over to Linux as my full time desktop at work a while ago.

You should have probably warned the Ubuntu peoples about it, because it's already packaged and ready to go for Ubuntu Intrepid! So it looks like the awesomeness of Gnome DO 0.6 might end up in thousands or even tens of thousands (hundreds of thousands?) people's desktops completely oblivious to your cautionary word.

Question about the "shelf" plug-in.

I'm new to GnomeDo.....I have the shelf plug-in installed and I type something in to GD and get the option to add to shelf or remove from shelf. So what does the shelf plug-in do? I've searched all over and can't find an answer.

thanks

Google should know--font sizes are relative, and the container of text should also be relative.

I can't read the last two lines of nearly every slide because my high-resolution screen requires a 117 pixel dpi.

Haven't used gnome-do (more a dmenu person), but it looks great, and from the feedback here you can tell it has many fans.

Linux devs are always in a damned if you do damned if you don't position. Provide a familiar UI and they'll say you copied it. Use a different UI and they'll complain it isn't intuitive.

Ignore the fanbois who have no idea what the four freedoms are.

Hi David,
Thanks for your comment on my blog: http://techismything.blogspot.com/. I've removed the article that you were offended by, and want to clear up that the article 'Appreciating Windows'.

Please have a look at my latest post, to clear up just what I meant. I didn't have the intention of crediting anyone else for your hard work.

Thanks,

I think it could very well be a guilting tactic, conscious or not. I've heard "God bless you" from many people in that type of situation as well, whether I give or not. I've heard it in other situations, probably more sincerely, but perhaps not as often.

(PS: I really like the huge font in the comment form. So easy to read, and it also gives a sense of, "Please don't write a novel in my comments." ;-)

A mathematical why of the Big Bang
Outline

Let Ui be a set of locations of particles of the universe.
U1xU2x ...... xUix ..... a set of infinite paths
(Cartesian product).
this set is equal to the void set by the
negation of the axiom of choice.

So there is no more space containing the particles.
The particles collapse on themselves: Big Crunch.
Then Big Bang.

The Big Bang has taken place thus the negation of the axiom
the choice is likely to considered as a good axiom.

I don't think that you should feel any confusion over your purchase. I guess you are interested in technology and this thing is so far ahead of all other mobile devices. I would think of it as an accelerator - the snappy gui, the sensors, the location stuff...
It will help the other platforms - open source or closed - to advance faster. It will help other developers to create awesome apps.

IMHO, using free software should not be the ultimate goal per se.
What really matter is to get the job done. If free software can help you to do that, that's great, but there's nothing wrong using the best tool for the job, be it proprietary or open-source.

david..

gnome do is saving so much more time... and saving the world's time is perhaps the best investment of anyone's time...

think of how many countless hours you have helped save around the world... im sure that this is one of the killer apps for linux (and hence any platform)

keep up the great work!

now only if the web worked as seamlessly...

im sure this will come default with future distro releases...

Hi,
I only want to wish you all the best. I believe you are doing very important work, so, please, don't let your joy to leave you.
I used to develop software for Mac and their commnunity is just totally different (in a bad way).
Good luck!

First of all, great job on Gnome Do. I can't imagine working in any desktop environment without it. The latest version fixes many of the problems I had with it before, and now it's almost perfect. At such an early point in development, that's a great feat. Secondly, I'm glad that this app was inspired by Quicksilver and is derivative of it. That's a highly thought-out and great move on your part, and that fact that you don't hide it as well is something. Many open-source projects simply rip-off proprietary apps, at the same time being highly critical of the proprietary apps that they were derived from. And most of them are designed different just for the sake of being different, or so that the authors don't face accusations of cloning another project. QS is open-source, and the more borrowed from it, it is better. Why duplicate so much effort just for the sake of being different, so that you can claim to innovate, when QS already has a tried and tested interface that just works? Keep it up!

I had previously used a Nokia 770, then now I have an N810. To tell you the truth, I hated the 770, because it was painfully slow, hardly anything worked, plus it was very ugly. I have collected over 50 bugs of the 770 during a single week. N810 is a dream compared to that device, it works, it is much faster (except the mentioned web browser), the hardware keyboard is a blessing, so it is a *usabe* device.

To reply to the message of your post: I agree with you, that Nokia - and others - should realize that tomorrow the softwer will sell the device, not the hardware. And this software is not that one, which could sell the hardware by itself. :)

When I installed gnome-do for the on Ubuntu Hardy running KDE 3.4.9 first time it was running the way it should be . Then I had a problem with google calendar plugin (I didn't enter the credentials) which would not let me start gnome-do. Then with a view to do a reinstall I deleted the plugins directory at '~/.local/share/' as well as '~/.config/gnome-do'. And then I started getting the error:

[Error 05:58:10.524] Deserializing Histogram Relevance Provider failed: Could not find file "/home/kousik/.config/gnome-do/relevance5"

I saw a bug report at launchpad (https://bugs.launchpad.net/do/+bug/240016). Just curious if there's any progress. Thanks!

Superb! Thank you!

I have discovered a bug in connection with the tomboy plugin. When it's enabled the tomboy icon also appears in the system tray, also when the gnome tomboy applet is enabled.

Gnome Do is installed via ppa Repo.

Any fix to this one?

Wonderful release, great new functionality, but to me it has 2 pretty large problems. Sorry in advance for the long post.

First off, the community plugins thing is great, and the preferences window is awesome, but for some reason I can't use any of my own plugins, or test new ones. The documentation says to put them in the ~/.local/share/gnome-do/plugin folder, (the same as in 0.4.0.1) and while it makes sense and it's there; every time I restart Do to query the plugins, they are deleted, as if with "rm -f". Is this happening to just me?

Also, the names for the new commands could use some rethinking. Instead of having "Create Directory" and "Create Empty File", which require typing almost the whole thing to differentiate the two, having "Make Directory" and "New File" would be much easier to type. Alternatively, allowing the Alias action to modify other Actions would be a fix-all solution. On the other hand, I'm working on a plugin that duplicates their functionality, (along with Append to File) but with the reverse order: [folder|file][Action][title], which I use much more often. Would it be possible for this to be integrated by default? I don't take credit for the code, all I did was switch the modifier and initial item sections around.

On a positive note, the "Alias" command is absolutely phenomenal! I can't tell you how happy I am to see it functional. Also, Rename is coming in really handy.

One last question: where did the "Last Item" item go? It was great for handling typos, but now it's gone.

Again, sorry for the long post, hope the suggestions help.

Do not let those people get you down. They said the same thing about GNU, GNOME, and Mono. Why reinvent something entirely when you can modify working ideas to produce an amazingly useful and familiar application that is free and usable on a free software operating system.

C# is far more cross platform friendly then applescript anyway(mono and dotGNU). There is no way you could have ported QS to linux, and Gnome Do is in no way a 'fork'. It is a spoon - you tasted all the good ideas from QS and then added in alot of ideas, skill, love, and work. Imagine a world where scientist where restricted and criticized for using existing theories, logic, and information.

Just notice that Do is the "Launchy for Linux Gnome". Wonderful work.

It is sad that I started my own open source projects after I became a graduate. I should have done more if I started in my senior year. :-)

oh wow. Everyone saying this is a ripoff of Quicksilver is trash. Yes it is a ripoff of quicksilver. He says that on his homepage. The major difference is that in this case, ripoff is not a bad thing. What would this world come to if everyone had to "innovate" EVERY SINGLE TIME SOMETHING WAS DONE. All inventions would remain in their most primitive stage. Whats more, opportunities for "innovation" would systematically disappear because they might have been tried before.

In this situation, the pop-up dialogue and the functionality of the program, while identical to quicksilvers, is still the best way of doing it so far. Why would Mr. Siegel have to waste his time coming up with a method that was inferior simply because the best method had already been done? If we treat inventions like property the progress in this world will end.

I may have over-dramatized that a bit, but I know that the people criticizing your program are the breed of mac fanboy's that want to insure the special treatment that Jobs gives them to remain theirs. I may be an open source elitist, but I know that there has to be some imitation in order for improvement .

Anyway, I cannot compile the latest Gnome-Do. The configure script worked fine but make fails with the following:

error CS2007: Unrecognized command-line option: `-lgnome-keyring'
Compilation failed: 1 error(s), 0 warnings
make[1]: *** [bin/Debug/Do.Addins.dll] Error 1
make[1]: Leaving directory `/home/john/Desktop/gnome-do-0.5.0.1/Do.Addins'
make: *** [all-recursive] Error 1

This is with the latest 0.5.0.1 release. Any ideas?

Danish: There are several alternatives for Windows already (I'm using launchy, see launchy.net). Anyway, it would probably be great to have Do on both platforms. Give it a try.

I'm running Hardy Xubuntu, and it works perfectly.

And Dave, I must say that as a former XP guy, I was really looking forward to the Linux port of Launchy...but now I'm not so worried about it. Thanks for this!

I know C#. I don't have a ton of time to dedicate to a project like this right now, but at the very least I could look at it and maybe come up with a more comprehensive punch list of stuff to do.

Wanna shoot me a quick email and we can discuss there?

Patrick, there's a great change. The main road block is (wo)man power. You want to work on the port? I already have way more work than I can handle just supporting GNOME, not to mention the other 1000 variations of Linux desktops, window managers, distros, etc.

Any chance this could be later ported to Windows? I see it's built using a lot of C# and so I would assume it's possible to port to Windows, what would be the main road blocks for doing that?

Awesome love it, spent the morning messing with the plugins, so many nice ones. Wish it could be ported over to windows, currently using launchy, always thought it was great, but after messing with this new gnome-do, launchy seems limited (never thought I would say that)

Ignore them, I'm a mac user and when I must work on linux (for a customer), I will be happy to have a QS (like Gnome Do) on it. It will be great to have similar addin capabilities on both.

You've written a great application and I don't think the fact you've incorporated similarities from another program you liked (not available on your platform of choice) should cause any bad blood with Mac fans. I imagine the ones complaining are a minority.

I hadn't used Quicksilver before trying Gnome-do and was really surprised how it changed the way I "do" things on my computer more quickly (didn't believe it when reading about it).

Gnome-Do is great. No one is ever going to port Quicksilver for Linux, because even though its open source as I believe its written in Objective C or Cocoa or one of those Mac OS based languages.

Plus if you go to the Gnome-Do site (http://do.davebsd.com/), right on the front page it says:

"GNOME Do is inspired by Quicksilver and GNOME Launch Box."

Why are some talking shit about DO, what if it is a ripoff? was there already an app like that on linux?

well then go an install quicksilver on your linux box, ooh I think you can't!!

Why can't an idea come from another idea? it could be even better that the original one.

"My hope is that someday, a brave young student reads everything I’ve written about GNOME Do, “steals” everything I put into it, and makes something faster or smarter or different with it."

Aah..funny you should say that David...I was just going to ask you: I'm quite free in the second half of this summer, and was wondering if you mind me porting Do to Windows. It would ofcourse be a sub-project that gives full credit where its due (i.e you guys), and may perhaps be a good window for many windows users to find out that the source of a great program that they will fall in love with is actually the 'hard, ugly linux'. Ofcourse, if you scan the web, Windows users have been literally begging for something Quicksilver-ish forever, and this would be the perfect answer to this huge need...

I really don't see the need for Gnome, or any other Linux window manager for that matter, to create unique UI elements. There are a multitude of universal UI elements that are OK to use given that the end use is GPL'd and credit given.

Until Quicksilver is ported to Linux, projects like Gnome DO are necessary and welcome. Gnome DO is a testament to the tenacity and hard work all Linux devs have towards making create apps.

I'm not surprised at that reaction since I've had my fair share of similar reactions from some Mac users. I'm not a developer but what they told me when they found out I'm using Linux the reaction was along the lines of "Why do you use a operating system that has stolen all ideas from somewhere else? Why not use an OS that has some ideas of its own and where you can get support if you need it?"

But in my opinion those Mac users are basically saying "Pot? This is kettle. You're black" even if they don't know it. It's hardly a secret that Apple's webkit is forked from khtml for instance, and is a very important part of the apple desktop. KDE users, Gnome users, Apple users and even Windows users benefit from that (the webrendering engine in Adobe AIR is based on webkit for example) and I can not understand why so many fail to see that forking, competition, and taking the good ideas from product X to try to make an improved version or whatever is benefiting everyone regardless of OS in the long run. Besides, just about every piece of software got it's original inspiration from somewhere else at some point.

What I'm trying to say: don't let them get to you. Gnome-do is an excellent piece of software and considering its popularity it seems like a lot of Linux users agree that it is filling a spot that needed to be filled.

I dug a little and there is mention of the link to Quicksilver but it requires that you actually read through the whitepaper and/or slideshow that was posted previously. It would probably be in your best interest David to put up a project page somewhere that summarizes what the project is and why that you can link to from your blog entries. Maybe put it in your Links section to the right of the page. Otherwise, you will be getting snarky comments whenever you write up a new blog entry.

Your ideas from the whitepaper seem interesting but I think you undervalue the simplicity and ubiquity of the GUI as well as the learning features of the interface. Also, the default scanning behaviours in Quicksilver are fairly comprehensive. The examples mentioned for improving the "poor design" of the Catalog are to add scanning of recent and open documents and the documents folder. All of these are scanned by the Quicksilver on my machine. These may have been added since the whitepaper was written but I definitely did not have to configure those behaviours.

It seems that what this project brings to the table is a fork of the Quicksilver project on an alternate codebase tailored for Linux with an alternate (potentially better) indexing engine. Which is definitely not a bad thing.

If you bothered to get any further you'd find that the official Do site pays homage to Quicksilver, as does the entire chapter dedicated to it in Dave's white paper (which also cites the differences in implementation)... I think most users would recognise Do as a clone, if not instantly, then eventually...

open source is about encouraging creativity, not stifling it...

Even the wallpaper is stolen from Mac OS X.

People go on about making Linux a good desktop.
Engineers need to learn how to innovate instead of copy.

Linux needs to come up with it's own UI elements to stand out.

The only element truly centric to the Linux expxerience at this point is still the command terminal.
